Prov: Mr and Mrs Max Pirani, Petersfield, Hants. (gift from the artist)
Painted in the neighbourhood of the artist's home at Oschwand (Bern). It is a view looking across to the mountain chain of the Jura (letter from the artist, 9 June 1961). The backing is inscribed 'Aus dem Simmenthal [From the Simme Valley] 1923'.
Mr and Mrs Pirani are musicians who often visited the Amiets and who were painted by the artist on various occasions. A large full-length portrait of Mrs Pirani was among the works destroyed in the fire at the Munich Glaspalast in 1931.
